The Future of Software-defined Networking for Storage Connectivity

The innovations made by NVMe in the automation of storage connectivity are groundbreaking and reflect what we believe to be the future of storage networking.

A new paradigm in business is driving the demand for high-speed, software-defined connectivity. One where modern multi-cloud apps make use of disaggregated infrastructure allows data to move on-demand to the areas most needed in the edges. The NVMe Fabrics are perfect to meet the requirements of the next-generation workloads and the needs of the existing environments and applications with improved performance, reducing latency, and enhancing efficiency. A prominent feature of iOS 15 is the ability to hide IP addresses on iPhone. Second, you can erase remote data.

After examining the different NVMe over Fabrics protocols for transport, we’ve found that each protocol is suitable for specific environments and scenarios. We chose to concentrate on NVMe/TCP for our initial release as it works just as well as NVMe/FC and can scale to higher speeds with a lower price. Its main strength lies in its ability to utilize the network infrastructure standard and the continuous expansion of Ethernet specifically in support of cloud connectivity which continuously pushes the need to increase bandwidth and reduce latency.

It also doesn’t require any special setup for the network (i.e., for support of lossless performance). It is also not vulnerable to congestion. The main drawback? To address this issue, we’ve been working tirelessly with organizations such as VMware to provide Centralized Discovery to NVMe/TCP since it lets storage connectivity be easily automated at a scale. Furthermore, we want NVMe/TCP to function as an option to drop in for FC. Still, we also want them to coexist (run simultaneously) with other storage protocols to make the transition to NVMe/OF TCP/IP easy for Enterprises.

To deliver this user experience, Dell invests in NVMe IP SAN’s product capacities and upgrades across Dell Technologies’ portfolio of Storage, Networking, and Compute, including a brand new Centralized Discovery Controller called Smart fabric Storage Software (SFSS) which gives the intelligence to enable this automated experience.

NVMe IP SAN from Dell Technologies

This brand new NVMe IP SAN Dell portfolio is available to use from, and with it, we’re announcing the following major improvements:

SmartFabric Storage Software (SFSS) is software that automates connectivity to storage on the NVMe IP storage. It allows storage and host interfaces to connect to the Centralized Discovery Controller and enables storage administrators to design and activate zoning configurations. It will notify hosts automatically of the new storage resources. Hosts can then be able to connect these resources.

PowerStore NVMe/TCP protocol and SFSS integration We have now made our Dell EMC Power store storage array to use the protocol NVMe/TCP. They will be compatible with both the Direct Discovery and Centralized Discovery management models. Prester Integration with SFSS will initially be accomplished using the Pull Registration method. VMware ESXi 7.0u3 NVMe/TCP protocol and SFSS integration – We’ve joined forces with VMware to provide NVMe/TCP support protocols and the capability of the ESX Server interface to explicit register discovery information to SFSS using the Push registration technique. We also have updated the OMNI plugin OMNI plugin to enable the configuration of SFSS through vCenter.

PowerEdge ESXi 7.0u3 with NVMe/TCP has been certified.

PowerSwitch and SmartFabric Services (SFS): The NVMe IP system for SAN runs on traditional fabric switches. However, using the Dell EMC Power switch and SmartFabric Services (SFS) can be used to automate the setting for the button that comprises your NVMe IP storage. SFSS will eventually allow interface with SFS to enable hardware-enforced zones in the future versions. Check out the dell laptop four GB ram price online in India.

PowerMax as well as PowerFlex (future) Future versions of PowerFlex and PowerMax: We’re planning to bring support for NVMe/TCP in both of our Dell EMC PowerMax as well as PowerFlex in the coming few versions.

SmartFabric Storage Software

SFSS can offer the same service similar to FC using an IP network based on IP by combining multiple sub-services to achieve the same capabilities.

SmartFabric Storage Software features

In the end, Dell, along with many other parties interested, recognize how crucial it is to boot directly from SAN. As a result, we’ve been pushing technical ideas to include support for this feature as well.

Performance NVMe/TCP performance vs. iSCSI

As we mentioned earlier, we chose to use NVMe/TCP as the first option because we felt it was the most efficient “general purpose” IP-based storage protocol available. We also observed that it could provide an enormous performance boost contrasted with iSCSI on ESX. For instance, the preliminary internal tests have revealed some of the results below:

  • IOPs – NVMe/TCP gave 2.5-3.5x the IOPs that iSCSI provides.
  • Latency – NVMe/TCP cut latency by 70-75 %
  • CPU per IO NVMe/TCP reduced the CPU utilization by 40-50 percent

Ecosystem engagement

Alongside working Dell has put into establishing NVMe standards to ensure that an NVMe IP SAN remains functional and open, Dell is massively investing in the NVMe oF ecosystem in a variety of ways:

Open Source CDC Client Open Source CDC Client Dell is the current main maintainer for the free client, which is utilized for Linux distributions to facilitate discovery automation. The client software (nvme-stas) is expected to be available by the closing in the calendar year.

Developer Enablement Dell will assist in developing a Github-based community for developers that will allow the sharing of SFSS documents on the REST API and a developer toolkit and useful scripts. There may be an e-version of SFSS itself so that developers can quickly come on the right track and begin automating connections.

Dell Technologies is continuing our long-standing tradition of helping solve our customers’ problems by providing new solutions efficiently, cost-effectively, and easy to put into place. It’s an exciting time as large and small enterprises continue to progress through IT Transformation to help stay ahead of the new demands for their systems and infrastructures. These new NVMe IPSAN solutions by Dell Technologies in storage connectivity automation are groundbreaking and reflect what we believe to be what’s coming in storage networking.
