We will use only the “theory” necessary to gain a basic understanding of each motivational topic. First, we will discuss what you can do to solve the motivational problem.

Motivation is not something we can see directly. That is the main reason why it is so complex. Instead, we look at a situation and notice that some actions, tasks, or behaviors that should have occurred have not occurred. We often call it a “motivation problem.”

As a detective, we must be aware of clues that hint at a “motivation problem” in an employee. These clues are behaviors.

Focusing on behaviors has several benefits:

The behaviors are observable; they only require our attention, not a complicated psychological analysis.

The behaviors are objective; they are not easy to misinterpret.

The behaviors are measurable; we can count how many times a certain behavior occurs.
