TYPES OF STORAGE AND PACKAGING METHODS FOR SHIPPING ITEMS

Custom Cardboard Boxes

Shipping items from one place to another is a much more difficult job when compared with delivering the same package in-house by an organization. In addition to keeping costs low and safety standards high, these deliveries must arrive on time. When shipping items, it is important to use a storage and packaging method to protect them during transit. There are several common types of storage and packaging methods. Each type of storage and packaging method has its advantages and disadvantages. Some of the methods for storing and packing items entail:

Use of Crates

Crates are sturdy boxes or containers made of wood, plastic, or metal. They are often used to ship heavy items, such as furniture. Crates are strong and durable, but they can be expensive to purchase.

Use of Cartons

Cartons are boxes made of cardboard. They are often used to ship small items, such as books or clothing. Cartons are inexpensive to purchase, but they are not very durable.

Bag Packaging

Bags come in different shapes and sizes. The bags can be plastic, paper, or cloth. They are often used to ship fragile items, such as eggs or glassware. Bags are inexpensive to purchase and protect fragile items well, but they are not very strong.

Unit Load Device

A unit load device (ULD) is a large container with pockets designed to nest stacks of goods so they can be lifted simultaneously by an overhead conveyor or other transport mechanisms. Unit load devices come in two forms: pallets for transporting items via truck or plane and intermodal containers or ISO standard containers for moving larger quantities on ships. Unit load devices are the best way to transport items in large quantities, as they are sturdy and secure.

Palletized Storage

Palletized storage is when cargo is placed on a pallet to make it easier to move. Pallets can be made of wood, plastic, or metal, and the cargo is strapped or nailed to the pallet for transport. Pallets are often used when shipping items via truck, as it is easy to load and unload them. Pallets are affordable, durable, and safe for stacking items on during shipping, but they can be difficult to work with.

Use of Containers

Containerization is when goods are placed in a container for transport. The container can be any size, but 20 and 40-foot containers are the most common. This packaging and storage method is popular for shipping items overseas because it is economical and secure. Containers are large boxes made of metal or plastic to ship items by sea. The units come in many different sizes and can hold a large number of items. Containers are easy to work with, strong, and provide good protection for items during shipping, but they can be expensive.

Cold Chain Packaging

The cold chain process helps protect food and beverages from damage while transporting. There are various cold chain packaging options available, including corrugated boxes, polystyrene coolers, and insulated shipping containers. Cold chain packaging must maintain a cold or frozen temperature for an extended period. It must also be durable enough to withstand the rigors of transportation. Cold chain packaging must use insulation and refrigeration technologies to keep food cold or frozen.

The storage and packaging methods listed above vary in expense depending on the material used to make them and their ability to protect the contents within them like strength or ease of use.
